Aronimink was supposed to be a Donald Ross love letter. It mostly was. Then the greens started misbehaving in ways that scrambled the field's true skill order, and more on that below.

A clean stairstep to a first major. Rai closed three clear of Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley. The Sunday 65 was the loudest part of the round, but the quieter story was day-by-day improvement on a course that punished anyone trying to force the issue.

Contest Winners

Four LFS contests crowned a winner this week. The largest field (12 entrants) finished with a four-stroke cushion at the top. All four winners played clean rosters.

The greens, not the names

The fresh read on Aronimink: the greens did most of the sorting, and they did it with variance. Rai came into the week ranked outside the top 100 on Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting. He left ranked near the top of the field for the week.

That isn't a player transforming overnight. It's a green complex generating outcomes that don't track ball-striking quality. Rahm and Smalley finished T2 at −6, three back. Justin Thomas matched Rai's 65 in the final round and still only climbed to T4 at −5. Different swings, same green-side noise.

The takeaway going to Oakmont: discount this week's putting numbers heavily. The next venue will not reward what Aronimink rewarded.
