Shinnecock was supposed to be a bloodbath. The wind never showed and the USGA softened the edges, but the old links still bared its teeth. Wyndham Clark held on through a ragged Sunday for his second U.S. Open.

The 64 on Thursday was the round of the week: six under, on a U.S. Open course. He spent three days protecting it, and a wobbly Sunday 73 turned a six-shot cushion into a one-shot escape. He finished one clear of Sam Burns. The opening round won it; the nerve closed it.

The wedge that took flight

Joaquin Niemann's week turned on the 6th hole Thursday, when he flung his wedge about 50 yards down the fairway and drew a two-stroke "serious misconduct" penalty, a call officials almost never make. It turned a 9 into an 11 and an opening 78. Then he went 65-72-66 and finished T7. The tantrum cost him; the bounce-back is the tell. His ball-striking still travels to a brutal setup, thin LIV major reps and all.

Three. That's how many players finished under par at Shinnecock: Clark at −4, Burns at −3, Tom Kim at −1. Behind them, a wall. Scheffler, J.T. Poston, and Keith Mitchell tied fourth at even, Mitchell carding four straight 70s. Soft greens or not, par was a score. File this leaderboard under "survived," not "scored."
