Hovland's Friday 61 built the lead, then a Sunday lightning delay and fading light pushed the finish to Monday with Scheffler still tied at 21 under. One extra hole decided it. Hovland poured in a birdie, Scheffler missed from inside three feet, and a 15-month wait between wins was over.

Scheffler left Cromwell as World No. 1 with another runner-up he can't quite explain. For 2026 he has one win in nine starts against six top-five finishes: a playoff loss to Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage, solo seconds all spring, and now a playoff lost from inside three feet. The mainstream files it under bad luck. We file it under a conversion gap. He is still the safest floor in cumulative scoring, so roster him there.
